Who is michelle?
Named one of the 50 Most Influential People in the Multicultural Market by Women's Wear Daily in 2015, Michelle Breyer is a visionary entrepreneur who took a personal frustration over out-of-control curls and built it into the largest social media platform for hair. TextureMedia grew to 16 million influencers a month, and became the authority for textured hair.
The 20-year-old company grew to include consumer web sites, a commerce site and a market insights division. The company gained a reputation for innovation and creativity. The company’s Texture On the Runway show - created by Breyer - became a staple for both New York Fashion Week and the beauty industry. In 2017, she published The Curl Revolution: Inspiring Stories & Practical Advice from the NaturallyCurly Community, which launched at #1 on Amazon for Grooming & Style. She regularly speaks at events focused on beauty, empowerment and entrepreneurship.
In September ‘18, NaturallyCurly was acquired by Essence Ventures and Breyer continues to advise the company on business development, content and market insights.
Breyer now serves as Chief Operating Officer at SKU, the nation’s first consumer products accelerator. SKU, with such successful alumni as Siete and EPIC Provisions, works with founders of food, beverage, beauty, apparel and other consumer-product brands to help them grow their businesses. In her role, she helps with the program’s curriculum, business development, media outreach and expansion strategy. Over the past year, she was critical to SKU’s expansion into the Twin Cities with ImpactSKU, a purpose-driven accelerator, and DFW.
Breyer serves as a board member as well as an advisor for several companies. She is a co-founder of Beauty ATX, a trade group for Austin’s emerging beauty industry.
Before launching NaturallyCurly, Breyer was an award-winning business reporter with daily newspapers in Texas and California. Michelle is a regular contributor for a range of trade and consumer publications, including AGEIST, WWD, GCI Magazine, The Hustle, Cosmetiscope, Modern Salon and the Beauty Insider Report.

“I’ve had the great pleasure of getting to know Michelle over the past few years through Sally Beauty’s partnership with Texture Media for the Texture on the Runway event. I have always been inspired by Michelle’s passion to serve and to be deeply imbedded in making a difference; complemented nicely by her strong business sense. She is genuine and thoughtful, always taking the time to have a meaningful conversation or share a fantastic business idea. Her leadership in the industry helped grow the Sally business, and I really enjoyed working with her.”
“I was the Chairman of the Board of Naturally Curly (TextureMedia) from its early days until the company was acquired 15 years later and I know her very well. She was the co-founder, and is .an outstanding person in every way, including hard work, intelligence, personality, leadership, management capability, inspiration, creativity and vision. She was a key part of the management team that built a successful cash flow positive, profitable company with 37 million unique visitors per year. She is terrific in content generation, promotion and sales and has a keen understanding of consumer marketing as well as the ability to work with top management.”
“Michelle Breyer is a Co-Founder of TextureMedia Inc (TMI). We worked together when I was on the Board of Directors there from 2011-2015. She is a legend in the beauty industry with expertise in curly hair, one of the reasons she started TMI. Michelle is personable and led our sales initiatives. She is well connected with industry peers and worked with them to identify and execute new programs and alliances. Michelle was key in moving TMI forward including working on our ultimate sale.”
“Michelle is one of the most creative and passionate leaders I’ve ever worked with. She has built her business and her reputation with her data=driven approach, and unwavering dedication to partners. I have witnessed her power to inspire and engage individuals at the many speaking engagements I’ve attended with her for NaturallyCurly as well as for the launch of her book “The Curl Revolution”. Michelle has been a trusted partner of mine, cheerleader for the staff and a “let’s get this done” (and done right) leader. She’s a force!”
